They felt like padding to keep the completionist dogs at bay long enough for them to make their dastardly escape for an otherwise relatively short game. My sex life could be described as difficult, but that does not equal fun. Difficult, sure, but difficult does not always equal fun. Some of the flying trials were a bit annoying because of the hit boxes and tight turns you need to make but not impossible and some of those challenge missions can get fucked, yeah I did whatever ones I unlocked but I found that I didn’t have as much fun with them as the game thought I was suppose to be. There are also a lot of new gadgets to take down the hordes of enemies that appear in this game but none are as satisfying as gliding into the middle of a group of thugs and beating all of them senseless without ever getting hit, what an unfortunate time to be wearing tight spandex clothes. The combat feels smoother and the gliding and hook-shots are an immensely fun way to navigate the larger city setting, certainly better than driving around in a giant clunky car that controls like a giant buttocks on wheels.

Much of it is similar to the last game but even more fleshed out.

Let’s move on to the gameplay aspect of the review while the Batman fanboys ready the kindling to burn me at the stake. I thought the point of a sequel was to do something groundbreaking and new, and while they got the first part mostly right clearly Batman isn’t the type of popular intellectual property that you can take risks with. I’m not saying that he isn’t as fun and entertaining in this game as he usually is but that’s two games with relatively similar plots. I won’t spoil the story too much since if you just follow the main story it isn’t an overly long game but guys… Batman has more villains that could lead a game other than the Joker. Obviously not too happy about the events of the previous game. And I’m just gonna spoil it but the main bad guy is the Joker, again. From there, Bruce Wayne goes on his typical ambiguous murder spree, severely beating down the downtrodden youth of Gotham and leaving them with crippling, debilitating injuries for years to come while he flounces about with master criminals that he may or may not want to bone. Naturally he gets thrown into the gulag by Hugo Strange, who uses the prison system of Gotham to lock up dissenting opinions of his work just like the real-life government does. Making the sensible argument that containing all of the prison system of Gotham, a fairly overcrowded system I will admit, to a sectioned-off part of the city with minimal supervision regardless of severity of crime might not be the best way to deal with it.

This game starts off not as the psychotic alter ego but as the madman behind the mask, Bruce Wayne. However, I still think that despite the larger and arguably longer story of Batman: Arkham City, the greater emphasis on the size and scope of the tale takes away some depth and doesn’t give many of the more interesting aspects of the story the time they need to play out. I don’t dislike the game whatsoever, I think it’s fun and really makes use of the aspects of Batman’s character that never got the depth that they needed in the prior game. So bigger must clearly mean better? Well, not by my standards, small as they are. It has a much larger map, at least five times that of the asylum, and features more characters for Batman to interact with.

This game, as far as I’ve seen, has been widely regarded as the best of the Batman series of games and I can see why. Now it’s time to pick up with the final game included in the Batman: Return to Arkham collection on the PS4: Batman: Arkham City.
